There’s a thump on the window a story below. After a second thump I lean forward to investigate. A bluebird sits on the branch of a tree, tweeting. After a few moments, he alights, flying squarely into a window, rebounding, and taking cover on the branch again. Stupid bird, I think, obviously can’t tell there’s a window there. He thinks he can just fly inside and get at that sweet warmth he feels on the other side. I watch for a while, guiltily bemused. When my mother passes behind me, I ask her about it. “Oh, that’s just Narcy. Haven’t you seen him before? He’s here every year. Apparently it’s mating season and he sees a bluebird in the reflection. Poor thing doesn’t realize it’s not a female.”
